WMWare workstation pro 15.5.4 seems to cause my Windows 7 laptop to freeze up

$

I am running VMware Workstation Pro 12.5.4 build-5192485 on a Lenovo W541 laptop with Windows 7 Professional (Service pack 1) O/S.

I have 32 GB internal memory, with 24GB reserved for VMWare images. The images I run use no more than  16GB memory. Very often my laptop becomes so slow as to e non responsive. Usually this happens after the VMWare image had bee running for an hour or more.

has anyone any idea as to what the issue could be?

Re: ESXi 5.5 host can be part of two VDS?

According with vSphere configuration maximums, a host can have 16 distributed switches, so you may can remove a uplink from your current VDS, create a new temp VDS and add hosts from both clusters to that VDS. After both cluster have access to the same VDS, move the virtual machines to that VDS, then move the virtual machines to the different cluster, move back the virtual machines to the non-temp VDS... and after finish all migrations, delete the temp VDS and move back the uplink to the non-temp VDS.

Problem using existing disks

I have tried and use some virtual hard drives from my previous setup that was just vmware player.

Now when I triy and use them in vSphere, I get this error message:

http://imgur.com/a/gIPLq

I have tried with several virtual hard drives and none of them is working.

I get the same error message. Is it a Esxi version that I specificly have to use?

Or do I have to reinstall everything?

Importing .ovi files is working at least.

Hi,

Sounds like you enabled "Unity" which allows you to use your Windows apps as if they are macOS apps.

Under the Fusion menu.

Go to View -> Change from "unity" to "full screen" and you should be back to the "Windows in another desktop" mode.

Fusion not working, windows cannot be activated, and unable to load any Windows programs on my MacBook Pro

$

I have a few issues:

I have a MacBook Pro 2016

FIRST ISSUE:

I bought a copy of Windows 10 Pro, installed a Bpptcamp partition and the Windows 10 Pro and activated it. But that required me to either boot Windows or boot Mac, but I was unable to use both at the same time.

So I got a trial copy of VMware Fusion, installed it, pulled Bootcamp into it, installed VMware tools, restarted Windows, but although you say that this way, I do not have to reactivate Windows, Windows still insists that they cannot activate my copy of Windows 10 Pro, as it was installed on another machine.

SECOND ISSUE:

I am completely unable to install any Windows applications. even though I have Windows 10 Pro running in Unity mode, every time I try to install a Windows program, it says I cannot do so on a Mac.

I was hoping that VMware Fusion would work well, but thus far, it is not working at all. it is completely useless in its present setting. Please help asap!

Not sure if it's a copy paste error... but you are missing a '.' In you $var2

linevar2 Should be

line.var2

can you post an example of your csv?

Try adding a -Confirm:$false on the Disconnect-ViServer cmdlet.

ESXi 6.5 Slow vms, High "average response time"

$

I am running esxi 6.5 with the latest patches and vmware tools 10.1.5

I am having very inconsistent performance issues with both of my hosts. Basically the windows 2016/windows 10 guests are sluggish at times. nothing will load and the os is basically unresponsive when interacting with the gui. The issue seems to be stemming from disk performance but I am not 100% certain that this is the cause, it may be a side affect.

What I have noticed is that some vms show a average response time for the disk of about 2000ms. Yet if i check the performance monitor at a host level the disk and datastores are all showing sub 1ms response time. I am not able to explain the inconsistencies there.

I have a local ssd datastore on each host as well as a rather fast nvme iscsi san that is connected via 100gb mellanox connectx4 cards. I see the issue with both hosts and both datastores. The issue seems to be worse now with the most recent patches and vmware tools drivers. I am using vmxnet3 network cards and paravirtual scsi controllers on all vms.

I have run disk benchmarks on the vms and the resutls vary. I have already seen it where i run a disk benchmark on a guest, get horrible results, vmotion it to the other host, and benchmarks to the san are fine, and then i vmotion the guest back to the original host and the results are fine the second time I run it.

here is an example of a bad test, the reads are terrible:

Re: Free ESXi Backup Solution for Windows

Re: Help! I can't login to vco at all. I need to recover my workflows.

There are configuration backup files stored in /var/lib/vco/backup/ folder (as zip files).

Error 503 / current node is not active - this error means the vRO server has not started properly. It is hard to say why without looking at log files (under /var/log/vco/) and configuration files (under /etc/vco/).

Re: vSphere 5.1

I'll also add that I am controlling this ESXi host through vsphere 5.1 which is located on my PDC which is at a different office. These offices are connected by a vpn and the fact that I can connect to my ESXi host tells me that everything on the back end there is working as intended. My users also have their network drives mapped over the VPN to my PDC which isn't ideal but it's my workaround to allow them to continue to work on files.

Which version/build of ESXi, and which version of the Host Client are you using?

Is it the same when using another browser, and/or connecting to the host from another PC (if available)?

UEM vs. Persona Management

$

Hello all,

I am new to all this.  I have a question I need help with.  I am in the process of standing up a View Horizon 7 environment from the ground up, before I get too far into it, can I / should I use UEM to replace Persona Management?  What are your experiences with this if possible/suggested?

Thank you,

Re: unable to create snapshot - File is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore

Thin provisioning doesn't help. The issue is with the maximum file size, i.e. not the current file size.

the problem is the hard disk is thick provisioned.

If I convert that back to thin, wouldnt that bring the vmdk size below 2TB?

raw mapped disks disconnecting randomly

$

I have an issue with raw mapped disks.

first of all, I have 4x Seagate disks raw mapped that have been working perfectly (for the last 6 years at least)

As I'm now looking to upgrade the storage I have tried Seagate Ironwolf, Toshiba N300 and Seagate ST8000AS0002

When I try to use them raw mapped to the VM but they all, suffer from the same issue.

Basically, I can see the disks at boot time (BIOS), I can map them into a VM but then they randomly disconnect, often (not always) at the same time e.g. 2x disks disappear.

This is affecting only the new disk, not the old one. Same behavior with the internal motherboard SATA ports or PCIE syba 4xSATA.

Anybody has an idea what the root cause might be here?

Also is there perhaps something I can tweak under the ESXi advanced settings to make this working?
